Young Advisors for Maudsley Charity Building Brighter Futures

Young Advisors for Maudsley Charity Building Brighter Futures

The Young Advisors for Maudsley Charity Building Brighter Futures (BBF) are a dedicated collective of 12 young people aged 12-18 from South London. They work with the Maudsley Charity to inform their strategic grant-making decisions. From March 2025 to March 2026, they worked closely with professionals and senior stakeholders at Maudsley Charity to inform their grant-making decisions on funding related to the BBF programme. Their involvement led to an additional £1.5million of funding being awarded to successful projects, with a total £7.5million being awarded to successful projects overall. They did this through reviewing and providing feedback on the proposals to the programme, engaging with successful project teams through project set-up meetings as well as shaping programme evaluation including through informing the successful learning and evaluation partner that Maudsley Charity appointed.

" Leaders Unlocked supported the Young Advisors to engage at each stage and ensured we evaluated the process as we went so we could learn from the Young Advisors in real time. We look forward to partnering with Leaders Unlocked on the Building Brighter Futures fund over the next three years – ensuring we listen, learn and act upon the voices and experiences of children and young people – those we urgently want to benefit from our funding."

Georgina Chatfield, Programme Lead, Children and Young People, Maudsley Charity.

How it works

Recruitment: Working closely with local partners and stakeholders in 4 South London boroughs (Lambeth, Lewisham, Croydon and Southwark), we recruit a team of passionate and forward-thinking young people to become ‘Young Advisors’ on the project. They bring a range of lived experience, including living and growing up in one of the 4 boroughs, facing economic hardship, vulnerable family circumstances, being impacted by racism or other forms of discrimination, and substance use or neurodiversity.

Co-production workshops: We support the Young Advisors to engage in a series of workshops across the year. These are focused on: evaluating the proposals to the programme, engaging with successful project teams, and informing the tender for an evaluation partner through co-developing questions for programme learning and evaluation. Other activities include a core group of Young Advisors directly presenting to the Board of Trustees for Maudsley Charity to inform their grant-making decisions on the programme.

Reflection workshop: The Young Advisors come together at the end of the project year to share their insights and reflections on the success of the project. Exploring strengths, areas to enhance and hopes for the future.

The success of the programme led to continued work with the Young Advisors and Maudsley Charity. They will continue to be involved in informing the remaining part of the BBF fund through informing various elements of the programme, including influencing learning and evaluation.

"It’s not very often that organisations who are able to actually let smaller communities and towns outside of London have the opportunity to actually say ‘this is what we want and this is what we want changed’."
