Lead Yourself to Law

Lead Yourself to Law

Leaders Unlocked is working with leading law firm Hickman and Rose to offer unique opportunities for young adults from non-traditional groups to gain valuable experience in the legal sector.

How it works

Lead Yourself to Law is a project that has been co-produced with young adults themselves. The project comprises of the following elements:

Work placements: Each year, a group of young adults are selected to take part on week-long work placements at the firm. These individuals are carefully selected on the basis of their interests and matched with an appropriate supervisor.

Mentoring: Participants receive one-to-one mentoring for at least 6 months with a professional from the firm. The structure for the mentoring has been devised with input from the young people, and the mentors are matched to the interests and aspirations of the mentees.

Taster Day: Each year, a group of 20 young people are recruited from London colleges to come to a Taster Day at the offices of Hickman and Rose. This day is designed by young adults to ensure that it addresses their needs. It features a range of elements such as career talks from different members of the firm, CV building, mock interviews, networking, tips for applying to university or training schemes.

Get involved

More than 65% of our
staff came from Leaders Unlocked projects

"There’s been a fundamental change in the way that we approach youth consultation. Before it was a staff-led approach. Now there’s a genuine youth-led approach; there are up to 35 young people, talking to other young people about their experience of crime and policing. It has been such a significant impact."
